Begin of the "SCALE" Project

My topic: ESCAPISM

I was given a restriction: Creating this SCALE Project with the Scale of 1m x1m

In the project brief, I was advised to enlarge one of my previous project pieces. In the "SHAPING SHAPES" project, I made a vending machine for university students, in order to purchase their "dream" careers or life. I like the idea of creating interactions between the artwork and the audience.

For this project, I was stuck at the beginning, then I started all again by searching up the definition of ESCAPISM

Escapism :

"the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy."

From that, I picked out the point "seek distraction from unpleasant realities" to expand my thinkings for more ideas. Then I came up to several ideas on sketchbook (shown below).

I have chosen to talk about the quarantine that almost everyone is facing nowadays. I wanted to show how unpleasant things had happened due to this virus outbreak. I understood that there are many people (including: students, officers, teachers, travellers, etc.) wanted their normal daily life back, instead of staying home 24/7.

In this project: communicate the idea of how everyone would like to escape from this unpleasant virus outbreak and "stay home" activities.

Today I did an interview with my friends (through messages), asking them what they wanted to do most during this "quarantine" time. I received many different kind of answers on how they felt very inconvenient and bored staying home all the time. The picture below shows some of the conversations made between me and my friends, saying the top 3 things they wanted to do most but was affected by the "stay home"/"quarantine" thing.

Then after collecting all the answers from friends, I made a list of what people wanted the most but it's unable to do at home. Screenshot 2020-04-13 at 6.26.48 PM.png

From the interview, I have also realised that many people wanted to go travel a lot but was stopped by this unpleasant outbreak of virus. Many things are being controlled right now, and I wanted to create something for them to escape from this unpleasant situation. (although no one wanted these viruses, hope it will get better). Other than traveling, many people wanted to meet their friends as well. Since many people are unable to travel and meet their friends right now, so in this project, I wanted to create something that allows them to escape from this unpleasant reality. (ANYWAYS, HOPE EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE TOO.)

These two pictures are the bedroom window in my house.

Process and Development of work

The two photographs below are showing how and where the digital illustration should be placed for the communication (placed at bedroom's window).

The illustration painting itself is in large scale, therefore most bedroom windows can be covered.

As you look closer to the picture below, the digital painting (aeroplane window painting) is fading away, and you can look through it; seeing opposite buildings from your home. It is showing that you are not on the plane but actually in the bedroom, imagining yourself on plane travelling when viewing the large illustration that is being placed on the window.

Boarding Pass for the #stayhome airways travel.

Addition of a boarding pass is able to make the whole travel journey in the bedroom to be more realistic. Therefore the level of escapism of this reality is more higher and higher.
